Rightfully belonging to the category of the great unknowns, The Bushmen was a multi-ethnic group that, for a brief period, carried out their activities in our peninsula.
The band was composed of the Kenyan David (drums), the Indian Conny (rhythmic guitar and vocals), while Jeffrey (lead guitar) came from Tanzania; two other Kenyans completed the lineup: Leslie (vocals) and Martin (bass). They settled in the province of Reggio Emilia, more precisely in Castellarano, and recorded a handful of singles. Their way of singing somewhat resembles the Primitives of Mal, with the typical English inflection on lyrics sung in Italian.
Their first Italian 45 RPM single was released in 1965 by Sunstar and contains Cosa Farai and So che Tornerai. The following year, their second single was released by Lord, the one that brought them to prominence, featuring two covers sung in Italian: on side A, there’s La Linea Verde (Somebody Help Me), a hit by the Spencer Davis Group, while on side B is Pioggia, a cover of the Beatles’ Rain.
They recorded one more 45 RPM in 1967 (their last in Italy), this time for Magic, with Uomo Perché and Jezebel. They disbanded prematurely due to a tragic car accident that claimed the life of one of the band members. In 1997, On Sale Music released this anthology CD, also in limited edition, containing tracks from their singles along with some unreleased material.
