Blackboard Jungle Silver Drops On Jesus’ Skull (And More) 1986-1989

(Area Pirata returns again to dip into the 80s with an Italian band from Brindisi. They didn’t follow the popular garage/psychedelic wave but were devoted to a rough-but-melodic sound, kind of American roots rock with a punkish temperament. In 1989 they recorded "Silver Drops On Jesus’ Skull", a mini-LP released by Federico Guglielmi’s High Rise. … "Silver Drops On Jesus’ Skull" was released in a thousand copies in May ’89 and got encouraging reviews from music magazines ("Rockerilla", "L’Ultimo Buscadero", "Velvet") and fanzines (Taranto’s well known "Urlo" even published a long interview). It was aired on several rock radios, giving the band the possibility to play a lot live and sell about half of the pressed records. Meanwhile I decided to close the High Rise label, and the planned full lenght LP was never made; the fragment of "Silver" inserted as a ghost track was kind of a teaser for it. The adventure of Blackboard Jungle continued with new members alongside the founders Vincenzo Assante and Giacomo Esposito (the single "Palabra De Amor" released in 1993 by Toast was the only document), but the post-1989 period is not relevant here. This CD intends to present only the band’s 80s story, with the songs of the mini-LP as a main course and the eleven excerpts from the previous demos as a side dish. (…) "Silver Drops On Jesus’ Skull (And More) 1986-1989" wants to present the band to new listeners and remind to the ones who were there a nice history of enthusiasm, authenticity and love for music lived many years ago on the outskirts of the Rock Empire. Some will not give a damn and we can not blame them, but for us – and for the band’s hometown – it has been a coming-of-age story , as a Kerouac’s "On The Road" set in Puglia instead of the USA. "Hey, I said Kerouac, I didn’t say Joyce", Vincenzo sang in "I’m A Jerk", and how to deny that it was a declaration of intent? (Federico Guglielmi, excerpt from the booklet notes)
