Tony Face Big Roll Band Old Soul Rebel

(“Old Soul Rebel” is the result of a three years work in studio and at the Pc looking for contacts and collaborations with some musicians, highly esteemed and loved by Tony Face. He gathered them together in his side project “Big Roll Band” and they gave birth to this record.
The album is a collection of covers including anthems and gems of Soul, Beat and Punk Rock: that’s what I call Mod Sound!)

A long and strenuous work well paid back by the satisfaction to see side by side a list of legendary

30 years from the blow up of the MOD revival scene, this is an homage by an od soul rebel, forever young.

REVIEW

Goran Obradovic – Shindig #14 01-02/10

Gathered around an ongoing idea by Italian mod scenester Tony Bacciocchi, faces providing a variety of musical skills here include Allan Crockford (The Prisoners …), Bob Manton (The Purple Hearts), Chris Philpott (Small World), Adrian Holder (The Moment), Tony Perfect (Long Tall Shorty), Doug Roberson (Diplomats Of Solid Sound) and others.
The Big Roll Band isn’t really that big as Zoot Money’s was for example, but I suppose that it’s everchanging line-up makes up for it. The album comprises of an odd choice of covers, ranging from less expected, such as Hüsker Dü’s ‘Visionary’, to more obvious mod revival stuff or vintage soul classics. Some of the versions I can really live without, but then again, you can almost feel the breeze of fresh air injected into Georgie Fame’s ‘Somebody Stole My Thunder’, The Ikettes’ ‘Camel Walk’, Sly Stone’s ‘Harmony’ or the groovy instrumental take on The Beatles’ ‘Hey Bulldog’. Nothing groundbreaking, but sure worth a spin or two on any contemporary mod all nighter.

Francisco Ribeiro – Rock Around the Blog webzine (Portugal) 12/09

“Old Soul Rebel” is a revisit “Mod” by the hand of Tony Face to timeless themes of music, necessarily supported by the rhythms of a “Hammond”, which became a game full of timeless classics interpreted by Big Roll Band, composed of a variety of musicians from bands as diverse as the Diplomats of Solid Sound (Doug Roberson), the Sick Rose (Luca Re), the Small World (Chris Philpott), the Prisoners and Solarflares (Allan Crockford ), and from The Purple Hearts (Bob Manton), among many others, all round a hangover instrumental and interpretive songs like “Somebody Stole My Thunder” by Georgie Fame, “Camel Walk” of The Ikettes, “Abba” of the Paragons, “Hey Sha Lo Ney” by The Action and “Love Is Like an Itching In My Heart” of the Supremes, do not stay here, also includes songs from The Beatles, Husker Du, Ray Charles, Jam and Nancy Sinatra, ending the record with two additional tracks, one composed by Tony Face and the other an original of Dave Brubeck.
“Old Soul Rebel” is an irresistible album, so much by the interpretation, instrumental and vocal, as well by the choice of the song, that could not have been happier and without exception, all itch spine above. Essential listening!!!

Fuzz Overdose Webzine 01/10

If Area Pirata keeps on at this rate, I’ll have eventually to pick up Italian, just to be able to read the liner notes of their wonderful releases. The latest offering is Tony Face Big Roll Band’s “Old Soul Rebel”.
For those not in the know, Tony Face is a legendary figure of the Italian Mod scene, being a drummer, journalist, producer, DJ and all around Mod aceface! He started as the drummer of seminal Italian punk band, Chelsea Hotel and since then, he has played with many other bands, most notably with hammond hipsters Link Quartet.
Old Soul Rebel is his personal effort, which took 3 years to make and with a guest list to die for, he has gathered an ensemble cast of Mod’s who is who. Luca Re (Sick Rose), Allan Crockford (The Prisoners), Paolo Apollo Negri (Link Quartet), and Bob Manton (The Purple Hearts) among others, parade through an eclectic setlist that sounds like the soundtrack for the perfect Mod gathering. Playing mostly covers, the Big Roll Band tackle soul, garage, freakbeat and punk, choosing songs from such diverse acts like Georgie Fame, the Paragons, Husker Du and Gil Scott Heron. So, Mods could do a lot worse than stuffing this CD in their parka pocket, on their way to the next allnighter!
